Let the Praises Ring-C (Brewster)
Angels From the Realms of Glory-A
Everlasting God- (Tomlinish)
Marvelous Light-A (Hall)

Jesus Paid it All-B (Passion)

We almost canceled rehearsal this week but from how tired we seemed Sunday morning after Christmas I am so glad we came in with a good sense of where the worship set was going...Steph did a great job transitioning into the first hymn by sharing about the invitation each verse to come worship Christ...we then went right into the chorus of "Everlasting God" and finished that song taking a moment to pray the verse asking for God's strength as we wait on Him...

Pastor Matt's message was a good close to 2010 in that it put the emphasis on God and His plans no matter our circumstances and no matter what is to come in the new year...excited to see what God has for the worship ministry this coming next year!...

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

Ensemble Prelude- O Come O Come Emanuel
Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
Joy to the World Verse intro

Joy to the World- C with choir
O Come All Ye Faithful- F
Glory in the Highest- A with Christmas verse

Advent Candle with Dance

O Holy Night- A
Unspeakable Joy- A/B

I was so blessed by the amount of people who joined in to help serve to make a great weekend of worship and celebration...the choir did an amazing job leading with their hearts, the new addition of the brass brought an exciting introduction to the service...and it was very fitting that we celebrated through "Joy to the World" to begin and end the services...

Van's message on "Living in the Gap" brought a reality to Christmas and for the need for the birth of Jesus, and coming out of which we sang out the powerful words to "O Holy Night"..."long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt its worth..."

Overall, I was very thankful for the attitudes of those who stepped up to lead by serving and giving...it's always a reminder for me that Jesus is in our midst when I see people surrender and love one another- which is not an easy thing, but it's so amazing!...thanks to all who were a part of the weekend!

KIDS MUSICAL

Hallelujah Your Love is Amazing- G-A (Baloche)
Fall on Us Now- A (Vineyard)
Glory in the Highest- A (Tomlin)
ADVENT
Hark the Herald Angels Sing- E (Wesley)

It was a packed stage with the set ready for the Kids Christmas Musical, but I was very impressed with the sound and tech team who championed getting everyone and everything where they needed to be...

Pastor Van helped lead the first two songs, and it was a great opportunity to share in our friendship- as well as for me to enjoy his heart for worship...I was very impressed with how the team really followed and listened well to where we needed to go musically...

"Glory in the Highest" created a feel in the middle of the set to sing out what the angels proclaimed over the birth of Christ...for the Advent candle, we joined in a responsive reading that partnered psalms that focus on joy and between which the church said together "The Joy of the Lord is our Strength"...and to transition to the kids play we sang the familiar Christmas hymn "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"...

Joy to the World Unspeakable Joy- A-B (Tomlin
Sweetly Broken- B (Riddle)
Desert Song- D (Hillsong)
ADVENT
Unchanging- E (Tomlin)
Sing to the King- E (Jesus Culturish)

"Unspeakable Joy" was difficult to find a good key- A was low during the verses but B caused the added chorus to jump up high- even still it brought great energy to the beginning of the morning...

There was a great theme from the first song going into "Sweetly Broken" that also expresses how before God we are at a "loss for words" when we see His beauty and glory...I was amazed hearing how "Desert Song" has really become a great prayer for our church...that took us right to a time of silence for the Peace Candle lighting...

We transitioned out of silence just vocally singing the chorus to "Unchanging"...and there was once again great energy at the end with "Sing to the King"...Pat on media picked out the Revelation 3 verse to put up on the screen during the intro, and I was blessed when one of our elders shared how that connected with him during worship...I love how the body comes together like that to serve one another...finally we ended with just voices singing..."For He Alone is Worthy- Christ the Lord"...

Our God Saves- C (Baloche)
There is Nothing Like- C (Hillsong)
Advent Candle
Come Thou Fount Come Thou King- C (Gateway)

We came into the weekend without a rehearsal during the week because of Thanksgiving...but the team did an amazing job of coming ready to serve, give, sing and worship...Todd did the greeting and lead "Your Grace is Enough" which brought great energy and excitement along with the theme that God is still good enough even if we don't get what we want in life- which is the same for worship...since the next songs were in the same key, we took some time to enjoy the words and lay them before God along with our hearts...actually during our morning run through we decided to begin "There is Nothing Like" with the bridge praying out the words: "I'll love you forever, Lord"

For the advent candle lighting, we decided to post some questions on the screen to give people a chance to reflect on what they are hoping for this Christmas season...which took us right into "Come Thou Fount Come Thou King"...and as always, Vista really belted out the hymn...we tagged our worship time with the end of the last verse offering our hearts for God to seal it for His purposes...

Thanksgiving Praise Night

Today is the Day

Prince of Peace
Real Stories

Fairest
Real Stories

Now Thank we all our God
Great is Thy Faithfulness
Prayer

I am Free
O Come All Ye Faithful
Jesus Messiah

It was really the heart of the choir volunteers to want to come back for our Thanksgiving Praise Night...we gave them the option of whether to sing only in the morning or just lead that evening, but their response was to do both...

We had a quick run through of the songs, and kept things very loose as far as planning...Pastor Greg did an amazing job of bringing a light-hearted tone to testimonies, and Pastor Van shared a solid time of the value of prayer followed by thanksgiving small group prayer time...

Since the Christmas decorations had been wonderfully started being put up, on the spot we decided to sing a verse and chorus of "O Come All Ye Faithful..." which flowed right into "Jesus Messiah" to end the night by emphasizing Christ as we enter the holiday season...it was a great night of relationships and praise...

CHOIR WEEKEND

Laura did an amazing job getting the vocal parts ready for us to serve...all our vocalists were out sick for the weekend, yet everyone stepped up to sing out passionately...going into rehearsals I wasn't feeling the flow with a few new songs to lead, however once we started in, it became obvious the focused theme was Christ, which served the message in a powerful way...

"Glory in the Highest" worked well as a walkin, and it also introduced it to the church since we are planning to revisit it during christmas...going into "We Crown You" we taught the echo part to the church and explained that the focus of the song is not that we are making Christ King, it's that we are inviting Him to sit on the thrown of our lives...

I will never tire of how the church sings out hymns!...the end of the set was also powerful to just linger on singing the name of Jesus...despite some of our setbacks, all in all I was blown away by God's presence through our worship community- Praise You Oh Lord!...

Forever Reign- C walkin (Hillsong)

Let the Praises Ring- C (Brewster)
Fall on Us Now- A (Vineyard)
Sing to the King- E (Jesus Culture-ish)
New Doxology- E (Gateway)

Our focus and challenge during worship was that God has gifted us to sing- just as everyone was given an appetite to eat, he has given us a voice which we can use to worship Him...I think I borrowed this thought from a William Law book I read way back in college...I also took quote from Calvin I heard from a Kauflin podcast- that said when we sing we pray twice- which is a reminder that worship is just as much heart as it is head...

"Fall on Us Now" was new to me, but familiar with the church..."Forever Reign" will be one we will revisit during a worship set soon since the team really championed the flow and core of the song...what was really great was hearing the church sing out to the Doxology which transitioned well to the message...

Saviour King- 1st service walkin E (Hillsong)

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing- E (Crowder)
Hosanna- E (Baloche)
Beautiful the Blood- A (Fee)
Mighty to Save- A (Hillsong)

This was a Sunday of changes...we switched Hosanna from G to E...our drummer stepped in Sunday morning...second service we cut the walkin to save time...but to God's glory the team handled it well, and the church didn't miss a beat- which always humbles me when reminded that worship is not dependent on my planning...

With that said, the transition from "Beautiful the Blood" to "Mighty to Save" thematically worked well...finishing with the words- Christ my Savior- immediately lead right into- He can move the mountains- we really took our time with the end of worship and enjoyed that moment engaged with God...

There were a few obstacles for the morning- but God as always prevails- "the church will stand she will endure" (Let God Arise)...vocally I lead the up front set alone, and after leading 3 worship sessions at the youth retreat, I'm grateful my voice was carried through...

Last minute we switched the order to end with "Lead me to the Cross" so Daniel could come and join- and it was so easy to blend with his melody...thematically I was keying in on rest- the invitation to come to Christ and trust Him with our hearts...the baptism video also touched on the same theme, only to be followed by Pastor Matts message on freedom...

Usually the youth lead every time there is a 5th Sunday in a month, however next weekend is the fall retreat so they switched it up...and above all I was blown away by their commitment and passion to give their all to God...the vocalists took time to work on harmony parts...Josh on electric carried the guitar parts to each Hillsong tune...and every member was where they needed to be when they needed to be there...

The flow of the morning really highlighted the emphasis of Pastor Vans message...of how God changes us, and transforms us to be more like Him...since most of the songs were in similar and relative keys, we were able to take our time transitioning- either with a spoken invitation to the church to join in focusing on what the words we are lifting up to God are saying- or by just allowing the melody to create space during our morning time of worship...

It was a more low key evening of worship- still the same passion though...we kept the sets in the same key so there would an easy flow...Evan lead vocally very strong- between the second and third song Collin came up and challenged everyone to take time to journal with God...

Coming back up after the message, once again Evan lead off well with a great spirit and expression to a newer song for our Saturday night gathering...the flow from that into "Open up the Sky" built great tension that was released with the powerful lyrics... "we don't want blessings, we want you"...

I am Free-C walkin (Newsboys)

Today is the Day-C (Brewster)
Hallelujah Your Love is Amazing-G (Baloche)
Desert Song-D (Hillsong)
Amazing Grace My Chains are Gone-D (Tomlin)

Choir Weekend! The choir came ready to serve God and the church by giving their all in worship for sure...we started "I am Free" during the countdown, then once it hit zero we kept playing then invited the church to join in one more time through the verse that built into a full high chorus...

"Today is the Day" was convicting for me as I came into the morning stressed- so when we sang out "I won't worry about tomorrow- I'm giving you my fears and sorrows"- it was a moment of surrender to let go and just worship...we decided to not do the key change for "Hallelujah" which also helped keep things more simple for the morning...

When we rehearsed "Desert Song" really didn't feel like a choir song- but hearing everyone really sing out on the bridge was another great moment for me... "all of my life, in every season, you are still God I have a reason to sing, I have a reason to worship..." Finishing with "Amazing Grace" helped transition well into the message for our current series of Galatians- especially since the major theme Paul wrote on is Grace- seriously, almost every chapter touches on it...

In the case of faith vs. the law, faith wins!...that was Pastor Collin's message theme- and the giant gavel was used as a sermon illustration. This was our very first Sunday morning attempt at using a click track/worship loop...and aside from my itouch giving us some trouble (thanks to me dropping it in water) the team really did a great job staying with the metronome- and my biggest surprise about worship loops is how much it really does free up the transitions so we can focus on leading others in worship instead of focusing on all the details of the song...

Another first was "How He Loves" for our Sunday services...though our Saturday and youth gatherings are quite familiar with it...Todd did a great job leading both "At the Cross" and "All I Have"...the transition into "Holy is the Lord" worked very well and built both anticipation and energy that partnered well with the anthem of the lyrics...

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing- (Crowder)

So enough is enough, I've finally committed to sharing our Saturday evening worship sets as well...this is week 2 of attempting to introduce click track worship loops...it seemed to work well for our walk-in song...Josh did a great job finding a great "That's My King" video to act as the call to worship- which really introduced the theme of the night- again, moments I wish we could claim we had planned, but just goes to show how great God is at working in all our hearts separately in our planning...

"Sing Sing Sing" brought some great energy that carried into "Forever Reign" nicely...which I'm so glad we didn't use the loop track so right before the bridge we could toss out this verse:

"My dear children, let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love. This is the only way we'll know we're living truly, living in God's reality. It's also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it. For God is greater than our worried hearts and knows more about us than we do ourselves." (1 John 3:19-20 The Message)

Then when it came to singing the words "My heart will sing, no other name...Jesus, Jesus"...it was our cry for God to show His greatness and make that a true reality in our lives...

Evan did an amazing job leading "Sweetly Broken" and "Jesus Paid it All"...transitioning them well...ending with "O For a Thousand Tongues" was the right choice as a Pastor Collin suggestion after seeing how well it worked last week during the Sunday services...

I always love communion weekends...we had a full team, and a different mix of music- "Hold us Together" worked well as a gather walk in song, which keying it to A helped that transition work well right into "Open up the Sky"...the surprise of the morning was how much energy "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" brought, building nicely during into the chorus- we ended by fading out with the words "there is one great love...Jesus"...Doug did a wonderful job championing the bazuki...here's a clip explaining:

It was a full morning...one of our vocalists was ill last minute, but Dan really stepped up and carried the harmony, so for only 2 voices we felt strong...Unchanging was a great ending song to go along with Pastor Matt's message about unity-and I wish we could take credit by saying we planned that out ahead of time...

The combination of "There is Nothing Like" with "Gifted Response" both in the key of C created a powerful moment drawing our attention to the fact that God's love is personal, yet holy..."Father we cannot come to you by our own merit"...

Lastly, Pastor Collin grabbed a quick clip on his iphone (more proof that I need to make the financial sacrifice for one) of the impromptu drama element before the messsage...take a look:

-CHOIR WEEKEND-

Prince of Peace (walkin)

O Church Arise (Getty)
Fairest (Packiam)
Revelation Song (Kari Jobe)
I Will Rise (Tomlin)
Stronger (Hillsong)

We tossed in "Prince of Peace" last minute unrehearsed, which is always a great response to God's attributes song, and really started the morning off with focusing our attention on God first. It was only our second Sunday ever singing "O Church Arise" but I feel like it was very singable even with the choir alone (no vocalists in mics), which back at Easter it had a more choir performance to it. The transition from "Fairest" to "Revelation Song" was powerful, and having the choir sing "oohs" underneath Stephs soloing the first verse was a great effect to the song.

What I was most thankful for was seeing how everyone involved, from the tech, to the 20 plus member choir (praise God), as well as the worship team...how there was a great sense of community, and humble service toward one another. I began worship by sharing this passage from Romans 15:

"May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we'll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!" (The Message)

My Savior Lives- Packiam (A)
Our God Saves- Baloche (C)
Lead Me to the Cross- more like Chris and Conrad version (G)
Jesus Messiah- Tomlin (G)

How Great Thou Art- Baloche (A)

This was week 3 of attempting a walkin song...the sax took a strong lead on the melody for "How Great Thou Art"...for the most part having a song start before the hour has really helped bring people in to be more on time, however the only issue we are still facing is the quick turn around between 1st and 2nd service which doesn't give much space for us to start early...1st ending at 10:20, and 2nd service beginning at 10:30...

The first two songs really set the pace for an energetic time of worship. The transition was quick and seamless with just a 4 count on the high hat..."Lead me to the Cross" felt a little high, but I could hear the 2nd service sing out, especially when we ended with just the chorus...all in all a solid worship set.

Awesome is the Lord Most High (Tomlin)

Let God Arise (Tomlin)
Open up the Sky (Deluge)
Hosanna (Baloche)
How Deep the Father's Love for Us (Townend)

Tons going on this weekend for worship. We started a new series which meant there was a new set and staging. I was wrestling with having the drums on the left instead of center, but after seeing it in place I was sold. Ginny did an amazing job with getting the logo up, and whenever there's a new setup it really builds excitement and communicates we are intentional about worship.

We decided to try a walk-in song again to see if it truly does encourage the church to get in on time for worship. I have noticed some improvement happen. "Let God Arise" finally seems to be connecting with the church, but I was blown away that "Open up the Sky" was immediately singable for its first week. Both Jill and Steph did a solid job leading verses in "How Deep the Father's Love for Us."

It was also our fall worship vision/planning lunch after second service. There was great attendance, plenty of food, and a great sense of community. Thanks for everyone pitching in to make this happen, as well as the great conversations that took place.

Marvelous Light (Hall)
Happy Day (Hughes)
It is Well (Fields)
O Praise Him (Crowder)

Not to Us (Tomlin)

It was youth Sunday, which meant we were all ready to go by 7 am. The church even applauded when I mentioned that every student was on time for rehearsal- showing their willingness to serve and give to God.

Even though we had 6 total vocalists on stage, the mix was solid (thanks Sean) and the girls each took turns leading verses to songs by themselves- and did an amazing job at it, not holding back and really singing out. We started "Marvelous Light" 2 minutes early just to see if we could encourage the church to get in the sanctuary on time which seem to help some because I noticed we were more full by the second song.

"Happy Day" was new to the church as far as I can remember, and it would be worth adding to the Sunday morning rotation. I was very pleased with how quick the new chorus to "It is Well" caught on and we will definitely be revisiting it again soon. All around I was very blessed with how well the church received and encouraged the youth that served.

Your Grace is Enough (Maher)
At the Cross (Renstrom)
From the Inside Out (Hillsong)
Come Thou Fount Come Thou King (Gateway)

You Never Let Go (Redman)

All morning we were rejoicing because the amazingly positive attitudes that everyone held during a difficult sound issue rehearsal. This is the speaker that normally puts out sound:

But for some unknown reason due to technical problems, our normal speakers decided to make everyone sound like they were singing through a walkie-talkie. So, thanks to our amazing sound and tech servants, this is what ended up saving the day:

Yet another praise was our solid Thursday rehearsal, which meant we only had to run through the set once after we addressed sound issues before the service. "Your Grace is Enough" was particularly strong to begin the morning upbeat. Todd did a great job sharing from his heart to transition into "At the Cross", which was new to me, but yet again familiar to the church, so I was grateful Todd took the melody on it as I continue to learn the song.

Sadly because the speakers weren't giving much high end, Josh's lead on "From the Inside Out" didn't come through as strong as it had in rehearsed. I'm always amazed at how songs during worship connect with the message even though it was for the most part unintentional. One of Pastor Van's passing points was an invitation for God to change us from the inside out, which is exactly what we had sung during worship. "Come Thou Fount Come Thou King" was very single singable, both the hymn verses and added chorus, and ended the worship set on a strong note going right into Greg's great pastoral prayer.

Lastly, I've been thankful for the way the team really listens for the shortened version of the response song, especially since we had to cut down "You Never Let Go" to V1, PC, C, B, B, C, C.

Sunday Setlist

Sing to the King- E
Desert Song- D (Hillsong)
Your Name- G (Baloche)
I Will Rise- G (Tomlin)

I Have Decided- C

Overall there was a great attitude towards worship and rehearsals this week. I was very blessed by the team's energy and willingness to serve the church through leading as well serve each other- I really noticed that everyone seemed to be listening to the other instrumentalists and vocalists to create space in the songs.

"Sing to the King" always works well as a call to worship. Steph and Jill did a wonderful job transitioning to "Desert Song", which the church is really starting to own as a prayer song. I had forgotten how singable "Your Name" is, and both services belted out the simple but powerful chorus. We haven't sung "I Will Rise" since easter, but it really felt like a familiar song.

Pastor Matt did a great job with the "Heroes" message, and it was a good transition right into a response by teaching the meaning behind "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus." Here's a clip:

Sunday Setlist

It is You- E (Newsboys-ish)
Everlasting God- A (mix between Tomlin/Brewster)
I Stand Amazed- F (Passion Version)
No Sweeter Name-G (Kari Jobe)

Unchanging (Tomlin)

A solid morning of worship. "It is you" started things off nicely by bringing the attention right to God, both lyrically and in the style of the song. The transition between the chorus and bridge builds the energy up rather well for a mid-tempo song. I'm continually blessed to hear someone comment each week we sing a hymn that there's a great blend at Vista of contemporary and traditional songs. Todd did a great piano transition from the key of F up a full step to G that kept the flow going.

This was our last week with Teresa, and even though she'll be back around during school breaks, we will miss her while she starts college up in NY. "Unchanging" was a new song for me, but coming out of the message it was a good response song that was really singable and familiar to the church. And how great was it that the video was so powerful it got applause as praise to God for living out love through us, not just on Sunday mornings but throughout the week!
